I am writing to formally report an outrageous and deeply unethical marketing scandal conducted by Starbucks Korea, which has incited national fury across South Korea.
To help you understand the gravity of this situation, it is necessary to touch upon South Korea's painful modern history. On May 18, 1980, a military junta deployed armed troops to Gwangju, massacring hundreds of innocent civilians fighting for democracy. This event, the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement, is a sacred period of national mourning. Its global significance was reaffirmed just two years ago when a Korean author (Han Kang) won the Nobel Prize in Literature for her novel depicting this very tragedy. Furthermore, the same brutal military dictatorship later tortured and killed an innocent university student who was fighting for democracy.
Shockingly, precisely on the May 18th anniversary, Starbucks Korea launched a promotional campaign that directly mocked and trivialized both of these horrific historical tragedies.
First, far-right extremists in Korea often praise the dictator responsible for the civilian massacre by calling him a "Tank." Incredibly, Starbucks Korea abruptly designated May 18th as "Tank Day" in its promotions.
Second, the branch used promotional phrasing that explicitly reminds the public of the notorious excuse made by the dictatorship at the time of the student's torture-death (where authorities absurdly claimed, "He died of shock when we slammed the desk").
This is not a simple marketing mistake; it is a cruel, inhumane act that desecrates the memory of massacre victims and torture martyrs. The entire nation of South Korea is currently consumed with rage over this behavior.
Although Starbucks Korea issued an apology, the public rejects it as insincere and politically motivated. This was clearly intentional. While Starbucks operates globally on the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion, Starbucks Korea?driven by its majority shareholder's problematic stance?is actively leading and spreading a culture of hate.
Is this truly what Starbucks stands for globally? Do you support a local branch that commercializes state-sponsored massacres and torture?
We strongly urge Starbucks Coffee Company headquarters to step in immediately, launch a thorough investigation into Starbucks Korea and its leadership, and take decisive, corrective action to stop this abhorrent behavior.
Sincerely,
